AUTOMATED COLOR DETERMINATION

SUCCESSES

The Institute of Textile Technology Augsburg (ITA) is a research and development institute in the field of textile technology. The aim of the institute is to develop innovative solutions for the textile processing industry and to put these into practice. Its core competencies include the recycling of carbon fibers and textiles into new raw materials.

Challenge

Revolutionizing recycling processes

The European market is confronted with an enormous amount of used textiles, with a recycling rate of less than 1%. The current recycling processes are not only time-consuming, but also require numerous manual steps. In addition, the production of recycled textiles pollutes the environment through processes such as re-dyeing or de-dyeing. To overcome these problems, it is crucial to significantly increase the recycling rate and quality in fiber-to-fiber recycling of textiles to create a sustainable and efficient solution for the textile industry.

Implementation

Powerful AI models

To overcome the challenges of the European textile market, we are implementing AI-based processes that are revolutionizing the textile recycling process. The main task is to improve the classification of recycled fibers and automate the entire recycling process through the use of machine learning. To do this, we use camera systems to precisely monitor the recycled fibers. Algorithms and powerful AI models are used to accurately predict the mixed color of the fibers. This enables targeted, automated sorting and mixing so that the desired target color of new textiles can be set directly. In this way, the environmentally harmful chemical dyeing process can be completely eliminated.

Result

Sustainable production

With these innovations, we are addressing the low recycling rate and creating a sustainable, efficient solution that both increases the recycling rate and improves the quality of fiber-to-fiber recycling. Through the development of AI-based processes and the consistent further development of textile processes, we are helping to significantly increase sustainability in the textile industry.
